HELP!! Decorating for Dummies didn't work for me!

Okay, so I know that a lot of my great friends have a natural flair for decorating, and you all know I'm envious of the great way you can make your homes look. When the book "Decorating for Dummies" doesn't even help me, you know I'm in trouble! I've come to the realization that it's so much better to ask for help from all of you, than to waste the next three years trying to figure out what color curtains I should pick, or what in the world I should put on the walls.

I've sort of tried to start the process, and think I actually have a few colors that I like. Here's the pics of what I've got so far, and I'd LOVE (okay, I need!!) any help/suggestions I can get!

The entry way with the door to the study off to the left and the hall to the bedrooms off to the right.

As you can see, there's a LOT of room for improvement here! I do have to admit that the little entry way is the best arrangement of pics that I've come up with so far.

I have no idea what colors I should use for curtains. In the living room, we have a kelly green color couch and stuffed chair, dark & light brown carpet, and rust red on the shelves and in the accent pieces. We also have a little bit of wrought iron. The kitchen curtains are another question--I have a light green table cloth and tan place mats with dark brown accented in the pinecones and the lazy susan. Do I match the color of the curtains in the living room since you can see straight into the dining area from the front door? Do I get another color? HELP!!

Haven't looked at blogs in forever but I think of you guys often. Miss you tons and you seriously crack me up. I am the same when it comes to decorating so please don't expect me to help in that area. However, I have noticed that just adding pillows and candles helps for mine. Looks like you guys had a fun Halloween. Everything on my end was kind of a squash. Not the best Halloween ever! Take care and keep in touch!

My advice for curtains, would be to either go white, or a color similar to your wall paint. I could also see a red that ties in with your throw blanket/pillows/shelves, if you want to go bold. You don't want too many colors competing with each other, or else it would feel too busy. The curtains in the kitchen don't have to be exactly like your living room, but they should complement them (using similar colors, etc.) I STILL haven't committed to curtains myself!

Wow, the house is awesome!!! How exciting to be in it and have a house of your own that you can decorate and paint anyway you like! But sorry, I am so not the person who is going to give you any decorating advice b/c that is not a gift I was blessed with. I have been collecting a few things I like for Teya's room and want to have a girl in the ward here come over and tell me where to hang it all! I finally, after a couple of years of searching, found some modern curtains that I really like at Ikea. But then we moved down here before I bought them and now this house came with curtains, that I actually like, so I am done in that department! Whew!
Good luck! Can't wait to see the end results!
